Thomas Heatherwick, who has been awarded a CBE for services to the design industry, said it was ‘an immense honour’. His Olympic cauldron was made up of steel pipes and 204 individually–designed copper petals, which were each inscribed with the name of a competing nation – click here to see Thomas’s original drawings for the cauldron.

Revised and expanded editions of Grayson’s and Thomas’s monographs were published earlier this year. Grayson Perry, by Jacky Klein, includes a completely new chapter examining Perry’s fascination with pilgrimage.

The bestselling title Thomas Heatherwick: Making features a new section on the designer’s triumphant Olympic cauldron, along with over 140 projects from his extraordinary career to date.
