Ophthalmic Nursing & Paramedical HandbooK
Dr Por Yong Ming

Conceived as a Paramedical Handbook that could serve as a guide for paramedics in the Singapore National Eye Centre, this handbook is also eminently suitable for other medical organisations, including foreign medical establishments. Over the past 18 years, the team at the Singapore National Eye Centre has
built up a wealth of experience. In this handbook, they generously share their experiences and present an easy-to-use guide for eyecare staff attending to their eye patients.

An ophthalmic care centre, particularly a tertiary centre, cannot do without a strong team of paramedical staff to support the ophthalmologists in providing excellent eyecare. Nurses are indispensable in patient care and counselling. They also perform simple outpatient procedures, assist in surgeries and are often responsible for the day-to-day running of the eye centre. Reliable, good biometrists are crucial for precise biometry measurements to facilitate accurate calculations for intraocular lens implantation in cataract surgery. Optometrists and orthoptists are essential in the assessment of patients in tertiary eye centres. Medical ophthalmic photographers perform photography and angiography, not just for case record follow-up, but also for diagnosis and management of various eye diseases.

It is with the practical needs of these essential nursing and paramedical staff in mind that this book has been put together. It also shows how the roles and duties of eyecare team members dovetail into each other.
