Cytoskeletal
Mechanics
by Roger Kamm
The purpose of this book is to present a full spectrum of views
on current approaches to modeling cell mechanics. In part, this
diversity of opinions stems from the different backgrounds of those
who have contributed to the field. The authors of this book come
from the biophysics, bioengineering, and physical chemistry communities,
and each joins the discussion with their own unique perspective
on biological systems. Consequently, the approaches range from finite
element methods as commonly used in continuum mechanics, to models
of the cytoskeleton as a cross-linked polymer network, to models
of glassy materials and gels. Studies reflect both the static, instantaneous
nature of the structure as well as its dynamic nature due to polymerization
and the full array of biological processes. It is unlikely that
a single, unifying approach will evolve from this diversity, in
part because of the complexity of the phenomena underlying the mechanical
properties of the cell. It is our hope, however, that a better appreciation
of the various perspectives will lead to a more highly coordinated
approach to these essential problems, and might facilitate discussions
among those with differing views. |

Fundamentals
of Voice Quality Engineering in Wireless Networks
by Avi Perry
Network operators are faced with the challenge of maximizing the
quality of voice transmissions in wireless communications without
impairing speech or data transmission. This book provides a comprehensive
survey of voice quality algorithms, features, interactions, and
trade-offs, at the device and system levels. Using a practitioner
rather than algorithm-designer angle, this book is unique. The book
elaborates on the root cause of impairments and ways for resolving
them, as well as methodologies for measuring and quantifying voice
quality before and after applying the remedies. A 'troubleshooting
and case studies' chapter provides a useful approach to identifying
and solving network impairments. Avoiding complex mathematics, the
approach is based on real and sizable field experience supported
by scientific and laboratory analysis. This title is suitable for
practitioners in the wireless communications industry and graduate
students in electrical engineering.

Creating
Agile Business Systems with Reusable Knowledge
by Amit Mitra
Agility and innovation are necessary to achieve global excellence
and customer value in twenty-first century business; yet most approaches
to business process engineering sacrifice these in favor of operational
efficiency and economics. Moreover, the IT systems used to automate
and encapsulate business processes are unresponsive to the dynamic
business environment. Mitra and Gupta provide insight to close this
gap - showing how innovation can be systematized with normalized
patterns of information, how business processes and information
systems may be tightly aligned, and how these processes and systems
can be designed to automatically adapt to change by reconfiguring
shared patterns of knowledge. A modular approach to building business
systems that parallels that of object oriented software is presented.
Practical templates required for accelerating integration, analysis
and design are provided. This book will appeal to consultants, analysts,
and managers in IT as well as researchers and graduate students
in business, management and IT. |
