The
British Museum Book of Chinese Art
by Anne Farrer, Jessica Rawson
This is a newly revised and updated edition of this classic award-winning
book, with updated text, additional new colour photographs and fully
updated bibliography This is a newly revised and updated edition of
this award-winning guide to the arts of China. The book explains why
chinese silks and porcelains, unsurpassed for over a thousand years,
have been prized around the world for their fine textures and brilliant
colours. Paradoxically, the arts valued most in China have been calligraphy,
ink painting, jade carving and bronze casting. The authors explain
why, describing the origins of these diverse achievements and setting
them in their historical context alongside decorative arts such as
lacquer, cloisonne and glass. The wealth of illustrations include
well-known blue-and-white Ming ceramics as well as less familiar jades
of the Neolithic period and rare world-famous paintings on silk from
the Buddhist Silk Road caves at Dunhuang. |

The
Art Atlas
Edited by John Onians
This is the first work to treat the art of the whole world from
prehistory to the present day through the extensive use of maps.
Covering painting, sculpture and architecture as well as other arts
and artefacts, this atlas provides an entirely new vision of the
history of the worlds art by showing how physical and political
geography has shaped its developments. Instead of simply showing
where and when great artists lived and worked, or where major styles
developed, the Atlas explains why these phenomena occurred. This
requires not only giving information on their political, religious,
economic and cultural contexts, but on the natural circumstances
surrounding their emergence as well. It also means charting the
availability of raw materials, such as pigments for colouring. Organized
in seven chronological periods and with contributions from 67 internationally-renowned
art historians, the "The Art Atlas" is original, comprehensive
and up-to-date enough to make it a benchmark reference work for
many years to come.

For Chinese Collectors
Translated with commentary by R. H. van Gulik
The Shu Hua Shuo Ling—a treatise on painting and forgery—was
written in the eighteenth century by the relatively obscure Chinese
scholar, Lu Shih-hua. It might have vanished from the landscape
of Asian art history, had the eminent Sinologue, RH van Gulik, not
recognized its essential value to our modern understanding of Chinese
connoisseurship. Its worth lies in the intellectual honesty of
the author in his description of the artist in traditional China,
the artist’s motivations and the means by which his work was
evaluated. Of particular interest, with the emphasis, at times bordering
on
the paranoiac, that persists today on the issue of authenticity, is
Lu’s observations on this matter among connoisseurs of his time.
One wonders what chance we have to determine the authenticity
of a work now, when even those with profound knowledge of the artists,
their styles and work in the eighteenth century were
challenged to do likewise. One also leaves Lu’s treatise wondering
if authenticity, as we define it, matters as much as we might lead
ourselves to believe.
An important, provocative work of interest to all who wish to acquire
a deeper understanding of Chinese painting. |

Vincent
Van Gogh: A Self-portrait in Art and Letters
by Vincent Van Gogh, H.Anna Suh (Editor)
Throughout his life, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) wrote hundreds
of letters, mostly to his brother Theo, who acted as patron, agent
and sounding board to an artist whose life was fraught with poverty,
a struggle for fame and alternating fits of madness and lucidity.
Van Gogh also corresponded with other family members and fellow
artists, including Paul Gaugin. His letters, which were collected
and published in 1924 by Theo's wife, Johanna, exhibit Van Gogh's
genius and depth of observation and feeling in its most naked form.
Here, they have been excerpted and re-translated and set side-by-side
with his drawings and paintings from the same period. |
