WOHA Selected Projects Vol.1
Patrick Bingham-Hall
From 2008 to 2010, Singapore-based WOHA Architects completed thirteen new projects, all of them significant public buildings. This monograph – written and photographed by Patrick Bingham-Hall – details each of these buildings, and documents the theoretical evolution and practical experience that has underpinned such a prolific and influential architectural practice. The personal backgrounds and early projects of Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, who began the partnership in 1994, are scrutinised in order to explain their unflinching commitment to innovation and sustainability. Forming a case study for early 21st century architecture, the recent works of WOHA have presented ingenious solutions to the problems of high-density living and environmental sustainability, without sacrificing the aesthetic delights of architecture itself, as the projects revel in the decorative and sculptural potential of their tropical context. Experimental and speculative schemes – such as the quest for an ideal ‘tropical community space’ – are also examined, as WOHA relentlessly refine their ideas for an appropriate Asian architecture.
