Someone
like you… Titans of our time
Serene See
(Winner of New York 38th Annual Creativity Award)
Many of our early pioneers
came to Singapore with nothing except for the shirts on their backs
and with a dream of building a better life for themselves and their
families.
Out of the countless
who came, a few built successful lives and gave back to the community,
whilst many others toiled till they died. Others took on jobs we
would never even dream of trying today; carrying night soil, toiling
in the construction industry and moving heavy loads with nothing
more than human muscle. These heroes helped to build Singapore in
her early years physically and socially. Their dream was for their
respective communities to become self-reliant, educated and prosperous.
This first volume on
ten of our Singapore pioneers revolves around the theme of building
dreams. The stories have been carefully chosen to celebrate our
lesser-known pioneers. The ordinary person with extraordinary spirit;
the ones who dared to be different and thought of achieving what
was then considered the impossible. They made a difference to a
land which they came to call home.
Written for 9-12 year
olds, this volume will enable children to find out more about these
Titans of our time!
