Attack
Of The Swordfish And Other Singapore Tales
Myths and legends have long been used to impart values and explain
why certain places got their names, or even how mountains or rivers
came to be. Although, at times, these tales may seem hard to believe,
they do offer a civilisation or country an oral tradition that tells
of how people lived in the past, their belief systems and their
cultural and moral values.
Interestingly,
these tales, regardless of where they are from, all celebrate universal
values of honesty, hard work, filial piety and the importance of
resourcefulness.
Attack of the Swordfish and Other Singapore Tales illustrates that
Singapore has her fair share of local legends which are interesting.
It also meets the need for a truly Singaporean book conceptualised,
written, fully illustrated and creatively directed by Singaporeans,
for Singaporean children.
This is NHB’s
first attempt at capturing one aspect of Singapore's intangible
heritage through oral tradition. In a sense, this is our gift to
our future generations for them to read and enjoy our very own tales.
Resource pages
are added to each story which would give information on certain
ideas picked up from each story.
