SOJOURN IN NANYANG: Works by Xu Beihong

Xu Beihong had a great influence on early 20th century Chinese painting. As one of the first Chinese painters to study in the West, he became a master of both traditional ink painting and western oil painting. Xu Beihong’s sojourn in Nanyang was made possible by the foresight and generosity of Chinese community leaders. Most prominent among them was Huang Manshi and his brother Huang Menggui, who not only helped to fund Xu’s education in Paris but also helped to obtain painting commissions for Xu in Singapore. This publication features the works of Xu in the collection of Huang Manshi which was presented to Robert Kuok. This publication was published in cojunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore.
