The title of this publication correctly describes the monumental reach of an Indian epic that many regard only as an interesting fairytale. Indeed, a moment’s inspection of the Ramayana tradition is all it takes to convince the observer that this is a tale that has transcended its geographical boundaries to become a part, essentially a crucial one, of cultures and peoples over most of Asia. The Ramayana has been retold and reinterpreted in the context of every culture within its sphere of influence. It has found expression in a myriad forms and disciplines – from the highly religious literary tradition to the alleyways of popular culture.
